For over 30 years, Mooloolaba Music Centre, on the Sunshine Coast Region of Queensland, Australia, has been the region's primary destination for all things music.
Mooloolaba Music originally opened in 1988 as Gazza Guitar in the home of Garry Brown, a self-taught guitar luthier. Garry opened a storefront in Mooloolaba in 1990, changed the name to Custom Guitar Craft in 1991, and changed to Mooloolaba Music in 1993. Along the way, Garry sold a 15-year-old his first bass and amp, and years later, in 2020, sold the whole shop to him!
Phil Drinnan, the new owner of Mooloolaba, started out as a bass player and then became a guitarist.
After pursuing a business career, Phil started working for Garry as Mooloolaba’s marketing manager, and bought the business six months later. Garry still builds his own line of Resonance guitars and, as the best luthier in the region, continues to work part time at the repair bench, where he trains future luthiers.
The shop is a guitarist’s dream, with over 500 guitars across 22 brands, including Gibson, Epiphone, Fender, Gretsch, Hagstrom, Ibanez, PRS, Squire, Martin and Taylor. Imports include Tone King, JHS, Friedman, Duesenberg and more!
The shop’s mission is to promote music to all levels of abilities. According to Phil, “Music is a source of healing as it assists emotional releases - both happy and sad. It helps grieving, it gives energy, it motivates, it promotes love… We don’t care what age or level people are at. Music is a lot of fun and people should be encouraged to have fun with music.”
