FEATURED SHOP OF THE MONTH
Brothers Sal and Tom Barone initially opened Mr. Music in 1973 in Allston, Massachusetts as a record store and head shop. Over the years, they started selling guitar strings, guitar picks, drum sticks, used instruments, and ultimately, guitars. Today, Mr. Music is one of New England’s largest instrument dealers, carrying a variety of new and used guitars, as well as amplifiers, accessories and a comprehensive selection of effects pedals.
Mr. Music was one of the first shops to sell Yamaha, Electro Harmonix, Mu-Tron, and Alvarez, and now also carries dozens of Fender, Gibson, Gretsch, D’Angelico, Ibanez, Martin, and Rickenbacker guitars to satisfy all levels of player from beginner to working musician.
Over the past four decades, the shop has continued to grow and has expanded its location from one to three storefronts across Harvard Avenue. In addition to sales, the shop also does instrument repairs and also houses the boutique Allston amps line, built in store by Rob Lohr.
Peter Wolf, the legendary vocalist for the J. Geils Band, is a longtime friend and regular customer – he’s even brought some of his famous buddies to the shop – most recently Bruce Springsteen! (Tom and Sal are huge fans of Bruce, who noticed the signed concert photo of him from a 70’s Boston Garden show hanging on the shop’s wall!)
Tom and Sal are proud to own and operate one of the oldest independently-owned music shops in the Boston area!
