FEATURED SHOP OF THE MONTH
SEPTEMBER 2023
MOM'S MUSIC
The iconic Mom’s Music in Louisville, Kentucky is one of the most perfectly-named shops. When Marvin Maxwell was a child, his mom drove 45 minutes each way to take him to and from his drum lessons in Louisville, inspiring him to open his own shop years later. Marvin always said, “Who ever took better care of you than your mom?” -- and Mom’s Music opened its doors in September 1980.
Marvin and his wife Beverly owned and operated Mom’s until 2020 when Jeff McNicol, a lifelong customer and family friend, became its new owner. Jeff learned about the music business by working and touring with his father (Steve McNicol played in a band called The Rugbys) and then Jeff had his own band, The War Hippies.
After many years working at his family’s ready mix concrete business, when the opportunity to take Mom’s into a new decade was presented to Jeff, he jumped on the opportunity. "The decision was easy to get back involved in music and give back the gift of music that my father gave me. I love our staff, our customers, and our students, and I am right where I want to be."
Jeff continues the shop’s tradition to serve the Louisville community as a full-service music retail shop that also provides lessons, and installations. Their slogan is “Come Play, Be Happy,” and with brands like Yamaha, Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, PRS, Gretsch, Taylor, Martin, Cole Clark, PRS, and many others lining the walls, customers are guaranteed to leave happy too.
